Tapas Banerjee of Trinamool Congress (TMC) is the sitting MLA of Asansol Dakshin assembly seat which he won in 2016 for the second time. In that election, he had received 71,515 votes and defeated his nearest CPI(M) rival Hemant Prabhakar by a margin of 14,283 votes in a triangular contest. The BJP candidate came a close third with 49,199 votes.
Tapas Banerjee has been nominated by TMC for the Raniganj assembly constituency in 2021 assembly elections.
Electoral History
An urban constituency, Asansol Dakshin assembly constituency came into being before the elections in 2011. Tapas Banerjee earlier had unsuccessfully contested the Jamuria assembly seat in the Asansol parliamentary constituency as a Congress candidate in 1991.
Background
Located in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, Asansol Dakshin is one of the seven assembly segments in the Asansol parliamentary constituency.
