Sony Bids Adieu to Vaio PC Business

Sony has signed an agreement with Tokyo-based investment fund Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) to sell off its struggling PC business which will be tantamount to the disappearance of its Vaio PC unit from markets outside Japan at least for the time being.

Vaio, which Sony founded 17 years ago, will be initially sold in Japan only under a new firm which will be set up by JIP. Sony will have a 5 percent stake in the newly established company.

As part of a broader restructuring, although Sony is disposing off its Vaio, it will continue to make tablet computers.

Lenovo to buy Motorola Mobility from Google

Chinese Hardware giant Lenovo came to forefront of world’s business attention when it bought IBM's PC client business in 2005. It bought IBM's ailing low-end server business in last month.

Now Lenovo has signed an agreement with Google to buy Motorola Mobility for $2.91bn in a combination of cash and stock. This would be $9.5bn less than Google paid for the acquisition of Motorola Mobility in August 2011.

This will give the Chinese vendor a major presence in the US smartphone market because its bid to acquire Blackberry last year came to a naught.  Motorola is still a strong brand in the Americas.
