Twitter Blocked in Turkey
In a move that is sure to raise the concerns of the proponents of the
freedom of expression, the popular social media site, Twitter which has roughly
10m users in Turkey, has been made inaccessible after the country’s of prime
minister Tayyip Erdogan vowed to ban social media sites like Facebook or
Twitter where users wiretap recordings claiming corruption among his close
supporters.
The users were redirected from twitter.com to
a statement from the Turkish telecoms regulator, TIB, which cited breach of
privacy rules by the social networking site for the closure.
However some time
ago Turkish President Abdullah Gül has a different point of view when he
disapproved the banning of the social sites. He said, "The closure of them
is out of the question. Both are very important platforms. We always take a
pride in enlarging freedoms."
Turkey has
however no immediate plans to block the other social media platforms like
Facebook and YouTube in the immediate future.
It may be noted that Twitter CEO Dick Costolo
has been selected to receive this year's PEN award for his contribution to
"digital freedom".

Sony Bids Adieu to Vaio PC Business
Sony has signed an agreement with Tokyo-based investment fund Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) to sell off its struggling PC business which will be tantamount to the disappearance of its Vaio PC unit from markets outside Japan at least for the time being.
Vaio, which Sony founded 17 years ago, will be initially sold in Japan only under a new firm which will be set up by JIP. Sony will have a 5 percent stake in the newly established company.
As part of a broader restructuring, although Sony is disposing off its Vaio, it will continue to make tablet computers.
Lenovo to buy Motorola Mobility from Google
Chinese Hardware giant Lenovo came to forefront of
world’s business attention when it bought IBM's PC client business in 2005. It bought
IBM's ailing low-end server business in last month.
Now Lenovo has signed an agreement with Google to
buy Motorola Mobility for $2.91bn in a combination of cash and
stock. This would be $9.5bn less than Google paid for the acquisition of
Motorola Mobility in August 2011.
This will give the Chinese vendor a major presence
in the US smartphone market because its bid to acquire Blackberry last year
came to a naught. Motorola is still a strong
brand in the Americas.

Lenovo Renews Talks for IBM server business purchase
According to a Reuters report, China-based PC
vendor Lenovo Group is also in talks with IBM regarding the purchase of the Big
Blue’s low-end server business. It has been already reported that Dell is also
biding for the same.
Last year, IBM and the Chinese firm came close to striking a deal on the sale of IBM’s low-end server business. However it did not materialize.
With this, it is now clear that apart from Dell, Lenovo is another interested
party in buying IBM’s low-end server business. According to the report, Lenovo
