Woman Reservation Bill: Does it really empower women?

The recent passing of Women Reservation Bill in the Rajya Sabha is a significant step in the direction of woman empowerment. It is still to has to be passed by Lok Sabha in order to become an ACT. But will it really alleviate the precarious condition in which the silent majority of the half of our population find themselves? Even after more than 60 years of independence, there is no let up in crime against women. There are thousands of cases of rape, molestation and kidnapping of women. There are hundreds of dowry deaths in India every year. Shocking as these figures undoubtedly are, worse is the probability that they are but the proverbial tip of the iceberg, for many more go unreported for fear of social stigma attached to victims of such crimes, and the proclivity of the police in a male-dominated society to take the side of male offender in many cases. In fact, half of Indian society is at risk of sexual exploitation.

Corruption an essential part of Freedom!

The great historian Gibbon described corruption as “the most infallible symptoms of constitutional liberty.” The evil thrives on human weakness. It is, therefore, as old as the human race and has as many facets as human nature itself.

Free India saw corruption reaching new heights. That may not be taken to mean that with the advent of freedom Indians have become more corrupt than they were earlier. Since the country won independece, any new factors have come into play and have combined to create a climate in which corruption has better chances of flourishing.
